Title:                      “China Veteribus Sinarum Regio nunc Incolis Tame Dicta”

Description:

Decorative map of eastern part of China, Japan and Korea. The Great Wall forms the northern boundary of China, Korea is depicted as an island and the three main islands of Japan are shown too. The imaginary ‘Chiamay Lacus’ is located in the southern part of the map, with numerous rivers flowing south into India and Siam. Striking cartouche flanked by a Chinese man and woman, an ornate scale of miles and two Dutch sailing ships decorates the map. Rare uncolored edition with no text on verso!

Comes from J. Jansson’s atlas of ‘Atlas Novus Sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’, engraved by Peter van den Keere and published in Amsterdam circa 1636.
