Title: “Die Statt Franckfurt an der Oder in Brandenburger Marck gelegen”

Description:

An early Sebastian Munster’s woodcut town view of Frankfurt an der Oder, a city in the Margraviate of Brandenburg, Germany. It highlights key landmarks of the medieval city along the Oder River. You can see small boats navigating the “Viadrus” (the Latin name for the Oder) and fishing weirs near the banks. A prominent covered bridge spans the river. In 1548, this was a vital piece of infrastructure for the city’s famous trade fairs, which were second only to those in Leipzig.

The legend at the bottom (labeled Anzeigung etlicher fürnemmen gebeuw…) identifies the city’s most important structures:

C: Das Seelhauß: A “soul house” or almshouse, which was a charitable institution providing housing for the poor and elderly.

E: S. Niclaus kirch: St. Nicholas Church, one of the city’s primary religious centers.

G: Das groß oder Artisten collegium: The Faculty of Arts at the Viadrina University, where students studied the liberal arts before advancing to higher faculties.

D: Der Juristen collegium: The Faculty of Law, reflecting the university’s reputation as a center for legal scholarship.

F: Minoriten/Barfüsser: The Franciscan monastery (also called “Barefoot” monks). Today, this building serves as the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Concert Hall.

N: Ein Carthäuser Closter: A Carthusian monastery located outside the city walls.

The map comes from the German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled “Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder…”, engraved by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch, published by Heinrich Petri in Basel, 1574.
