Title: “BERG St. WINOX. WINOXBERGEN en Flamand. Ville forte du Comte de Flandre, au Roy: Située fur la Riviere de Colme, a 51 de grez de latitude et a 23. degrez 40. minutes de longitude”
Description:
Very decorative plan of the fortified city of Bergues (historically referred to as Berg St. Winox or Winoxbergen), located in French Flanders. The map illustrates the town’s elaborate star-shaped defensive system, which was significantly perfected by the famed military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban in the 17th century. It details 40 specific sites listed in the right-hand “RENVOY” (index), including the Abbey of Saint Winoc (labeled #24), the Belfry (#17), and various defensive gates like the Porte de Cassel and Porte de Dunkerque. The town is described as a “strong city of the Count of Flanders, belonging to the King,” situated on the Colme River. It was a vital military stronghold due to its ability to flood the surrounding plains to halt enemy progress.
The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
