Title: “MONT-ROYAL Estune Fortresse Nouvele, Bastie par le Roy Sur la Moselle…”
Description:
Very decorative plan of the Mont-Royal Fortress in Traben-Trarbach, Germany, along the Moselle River. It highlights the fortress’s strategic position on a rocky promontory surrounded by the river. It was built starting in 1687 (or 1691 according to some sources) for King Louis XIV of France to serve as a key defensive position on the Moselle. Following the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697, the fortress was ordered to be dismantled (razed), today, only ruins of the structure remain.
The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
