1693 – N. de Fer – Verue Ville
30 €
Title: “Veue de VERUE Ville de Piemont Située prés de la Riviere du Po.”
Description:
Very decorative panoramic view of the Verrua Castle, it stands on an elevated site near the confluence of the Dora Baltea and Po Rivers in the municipality of Verrua Savoia (province of Turin). It is located right on the border between the provinces of Turin, Vercelli, and Alessandria, between the Casale and Turin hills. From the hilltop, there is a wide view of the Po River and the Vercelli plain, a strategic position that transformed it into a fortified settlement as early as Celtic times. Long contested between the House of Savoy and the Marquises of Monferrato, Verrua Castle became a fortress during the 18th-century expansions.
The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
