Title:                      “Mappe-Monde dressèe pour l’etude de la Geographie relativement aux Auteurs les plus Modernes.

Description:
​Highly decorative double hemisphere map of the world, held aloft by two different depictions of Atlas holding a drape-shaped vignette too. Map features a prominent Sea of the West (Mer de l’Ouest), Northwest Passage in North America and a conjectural shape for Australia that incorporates Tasmania and New Guinea into the mainland. The map and borders were printed from two separate plates and then assembled with the french text panels with descriptions of the represented geographic area.

Comes from DESNOS & BRION DE LA TOUR edition atlas “Atlas général, méthodique et élémentaire pour l’étude de la géographie et de l’histoire moderne, dressé. par une Société d’ingénieurs géographes du Roi… “ published in Paris in 1798.
