Title: "Nova Illustrissimi Principatus Pomeraniae Descriptio cum adjuncta Principum Genealogia et Principum veris et potiorum Urbium imaginibus et Nobilium Insignibus."

&

"Pomeraniae et rerum in ea memorabilium brevis descriptio E. Lubini" … "Nicolas Geilkerckius sculpsit"

Description:

Six original sheets from the "Große Lubinsche Karte", the great wall map of the Duchy of Pomerania and one of the most splendid regional maps of the 17th century. Duke Philipp II of Pomerania-Stettin commissioned it from Eilhard Lubinus (Lübben), professor at the University of Rostock, who surveyed the whole duchy himself. The map was engraved in Amsterdam by Nicolaes Geilkercken on twelve copper plates. Assembled, they form a map of about 221 x 125 cm, with the Griffin dynasty's family tree, 49 town views and the coats of arms of 353 noble families. Only a few proof copies were printed in 1618, and they are virtually unobtainable. The plates were rediscovered in 1756 and reprinted in 1758, the edition in which the map is usually found today.

This group contains six of the twelve sheets: the two central sheets of the top row, with the title and the genealogy (sheets 2 and 3), and the complete bottom row, with the description of Pomerania and its town views (sheets 9 to 12).

Sheets 2 and 3: the title and the Griffin dynasty.

The title: the great title runs across both sheets in a decorative frame.

The family tree: below it, the family tree of the House of Griffin, the dukes of Pomerania, grows across the Baltic like a vine. It carries dozens of medallion portraits, from the earliest princes to the ducal family of Lubinus's own day, with dates of birth, marriages and burials. Among them is Eric of Pomerania, King of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

The coast: sheet 2 shows the island of Rügen with Arkona, Jasmund and Mönchgut. Sheet 3 has a large compass rose and the coast of eastern Pomerania around Stolp, Rügenwalde and Schlawe.

Noble arms: along the top, a row of noble coats of arms "in alphabetical order, without prejudice to anyone".

Sheet 9: the description of Pomerania. Under the heading "Pomeraniae et rerum in ea memorabilium brevis descriptio E. Lubini", Lubinus's Latin account of the country begins. It is set in an architectural frame crowned by a river god and a sea nymph. Around it are views of Pasewalk, Ueckermünde, Greifenhagen (as a town plan), Damgarten, Richtenberg, Bahn (plan), Schlawe and a further town with a lettered key.

Sheet 10: the Oder. The map shows the Oder valley with Stettin, Damm, Gartz and Greifenhagen, the Dammscher See and Lake Madü, against the "Marchiae Pars" of Brandenburg. Beside the scale of miles, a surveyor works with compasses and instruments. The text describes Rügen, the bishopric of Cammin, the lordships of Lauenburg and Bütow, the climate, crops and the export of Pomeranian wool. Below are views of Zanow, Leba and Gartz.

Sheet 11: the engraver's signature. The map shows the country around Arnswalde and the Ihna river, with Geilkercken's signature "Nicolas Geilkerckius sculpsit" beside a putto, under a trophy of arms and musical instruments. The text describes the riches of Pomerania: fruit and wine, salt from Kolberg, amber from the coast, glassworks, bison, bears and wild horses, the falcons exported to France, England and Spain, and the famous fish of Lake Madü. Below are views of Damm (plan), Zachan and Jacobshagen.

Sheet 12: the lower right corner. A draped banner carries the arms of the Pomeranian lands above the history of Pomerania, from its conversion by St Otto of Bamberg to the Reformation and the founding of the University of Greifswald. It also gives a "Catalogus Urbium" listing the towns of the duchy and a "Catalogus Piscium" listing the fish of its waters. Around it are views of Cammin, Greifenberg, Rügenwalde, Saatzig, Bublitz, Körlin, Kolbatz and Friedrichswalde.

Every sheet is framed by bands of noble coats of arms with family names. A rare chance to own a substantial part of the most important early map of Pomerania, now divided between Germany and Poland.

Title: "A. Newe Mape of Germany Newly Augmented by. Iohn Speed. Ano. Dom: 1626”

Description:

A decorative carte-à-figures map of Germany and Central Europe from John Speed's "A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World", the first world atlas compiled by an Englishman. George Humble first published it in London in 1627, and its maps are dated 1626. This map carries Humble's imprint, "Are to be sold in pops-head Alley by G. Humble", which was used on the editions before the Bassett & Chiswell issue of 1676.

The map shows the Holy Roman Empire in the years of the Thirty Years' War. It reaches from the Low Countries, Lorraine and Switzerland in the west to Prussia, Poland and Hungary in the east, and from Holstein and "The East Sea" (the Baltic) south to northern Italy and Bosnia. It is densely filled with towns, rivers, forests and mountains, and has a compass rose in "The Ocean Sea". The title cartouche, topped by the crowned double-headed imperial eagle.

The decorative border is what makes Speed's maps so sought after. Eight oval bird's-eye views run along the top: Heidelberg, Frankfurt am Main, Vienna, Prague, Cologne, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and Augsburg. The side panels show ten figures in German costume: a nobleman and a gentlewoman, a merchant and his wife, Bohemian and Swiss men and women, and a countryman and a countrywoman.

Verso. The back carries English text, "The Description of Germany", with a woodcut headpiece and a decorative initial. Speed explains the name "Germany" and its legendary founder Tuisco, the rivers and products of the land, and credits the invention of gunpowder to "Bertholdus Swart a Franciscan". He describes the government of the Empire, the seven Electors and their duties at the coronation, and the Emperor's three crowns of silver, iron and gold. He then surveys 35 provinces, from Westphalia, "famous for Swine and excellent Bacon", and Münster with its Anabaptist "King of Sion", to Bohemia, Silesia, Pomerania and Austria.

The text was written during the Thirty Years' War. It recalls the fall of Prague, when the King and Queen of Bohemia (Frederick V and Elizabeth Stuart, the "Winter King" and "Winter Queen") had to flee to Silesia. It also praises Count Mansfeld, "who to this day wars upon the Emperours party, in the behalfe of the Illustrious Palatine, and his unparalleled Lady Elizabeth, Sister to his Royall Majesty of England".

This is one of the most decorative 17th-century maps of Germany, by Britain's best-known early mapmaker.

Title: "Allgemeine Uebersicht des Kriegs Schauplazes am Rhein, der Mosel, Maas, Marne, Seine, Schelde, &c., im Jahr 1793”

Description:

Historically significant map documenting the theater of war during the French Revolutionary Wars of 1793, covering the vast region bounded by the river systems of the Rhine, Moselle, Meuse (Maas), Marne, Seine, and Scheldt. The map spans from Flanders and the Channel coast in the northwest, across Artois, Picardy, Champagne, and Lorraine, to the Rhineland, Alsace, Baden, and Württemberg in the east — encompassing the key military and political territories contested during the early years of the French Revolutionary campaigns, including the Austrian Netherlands, the Bishopric of Liège, Luxembourg, and the Palatinate.

Numerous towns are marked with small fortress/settlement symbols, and territorial boundaries are delicately outlined in hand-colored washes distinguishing the patchwork of contemporary states, bishoprics, and duchies. Two scale bars (Geographische Meilen and Französische Meilen) appear in the lower left.

The upper right corner bears an elaborate military trophy vignette — a pile of cannon, drums, flags, and halberds — beneath the title cartouche, reflecting the map's wartime subject matter. The imprint credits the design to Franz Ludwig Güssefeld, published in Nuremberg by the Homann Heirs ("Nürnberg bey d. Homann. Erben") under Imperial privilege, dated 1793.

Franz Ludwig Güssefeld was a highly influential Prussian cartographer, engineer, and surveyor renowned for creating exceptionally accurate regional and international maps.

Description:

Rare and very detailed antique map of the Neumark (New March), the historical eastern territory of Brandenburg, newly drafted and divided according to its administrative districts (Kreise) by German cartographer Franz Ludwig Güssefeld. The map covers the region bordered by Hinterpommern (Farther Pomerania) to the north, Polen (Poland) to the east, Schlesien (Silesia) to the south, and the Uckermark/Mittelmark to the west, with the Oder and Warthe (Warthe Fl.) rivers clearly traced through the territory.

The nine constituent Kreise are individually hand-colored and identified by two-letter abbreviations (KK – Königsberg, SoK – Soldin, LK – Landsberg, FK – Friedeberg, AK – Arensvalde, DK – Dramburg, SK – Schiefelbein, StK – Sternberg, CrK – Crossen, ZK – Züllichau, SchK – Schwiebus), fully explained in an extensive legend ("Erläuterung der Zeichen und Buchstaben") in the upper left corner detailing town ranks, church types, mills, noble estates, and administrative seats.

The lower right features an elegant neoclassical title cartouche in the form of a stone altar/pedestal set beneath trees, bearing the imprint: published in Nuremberg by Weigel und Schneider, 1789, under Imperial privilege ("Mit Kayserl. allergnst. Privil."). A pair of scale bars (German/geographic miles and large miles) appears below the cartouche too.

Description:

Rare antique map of the Duchy of Pomerania along with adjacent regions spanning modern-day northeastern Germany and northwestern Poland, after Frederick de Wit map. It borders the Baltic Sea, labeled here in Latin as Mare Balticum and in Dutch/German variations as Vulgo De Oost Zee. Very decorative title cartouche.

The geographical layout was originally created and engraved by the Dutch cartographer Justus Danckerts in Amsterdam. Following the decline of the Danckerts firm, the Ottens brothers acquired their inventory of printing plates in 1726. They modified the cartouche at the top to display their own imprint—"Authore per R. & J. Ottens"—and sold it inside their own commercial atlase "Atlas Maior" published in Amsterdam.

Title: "Octava Evropae Tabula” & "Nona Evro" & "Pae Tabula"

Description:
Very rare Ptolemaic map of European Sarmatia (Sarmatia Europae), a historical classical region covering modern-day Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Southern Russia. The map prominently features the Tauric Chersonese (Crimea Peninsula) pointing down into the Palus Maeotis (Sea of Azov) on the lower right. It features ancient mountain ranges like the Hyperborean and Riphean mountains drawn in a stylized, early Renaissance pictorial format.

Verso, on left side (Nona Evro) depicts the ancient Roman Balkans and Central-Eastern Europe. It clearly marks ancient provinces such as Dacia (modern Romania & Moldova), Iaziges Metanaste, Mysia Superior and Inferior (modern Serbia, Bulgaria), and Thracia. The right side (Pae Tabula) showing the Sicily island, Italy.

Silvano’s 1511 book is famous for being one of the earliest to utilize two-color printing (red ink for major regional names and black ink for local topography and smaller text labels).

Comes from the Bernardus Sylvanus book „Claudii Ptholemaei Alexandrini Liber Geographiae cum tabulis et universali figura et cum additione locorum quae a recentioribus reperta sunt diligenti cura emendatus et impressus.", published by Jacobus Pentius de Leucho in Venice, 1511.

Title: "Das Königliche Haupt quartier oder Hoff Lager in Grund Risse nach sinen Abtheilungen vorgestellt."

Description:
Very rare and unusual copper engraved map of the Zeithain military camp from 1730 (known as Lustlager von Zeithain). It was a grandiose military parade and diplomatic celebration organized by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland.
The central section shows the topographical plan of the camp, with the tents arranged neatly in squares (indicated by Roman numerals such as IV, V, VI) and the positions of the cavalry and infantry.
At the top and bottom are various perspective views showing: The royal and general headquarters (e.g. Count Wackerbarth's headquarters). Logistical facilities such as bread ovens and slaughterhouses. The pontoon bridge over the Elbe.
At the sides and at the bottom are detailed lists (in German) of the regiments, commanders and explanations of the various sections of the camp.
The Great Campement near Mühlberg, also called the pleasure camp of Zeithain, was a grandiose troop review by Augustus the Strong, combined with a display of royal splendor, which took place from June 1st to June 26, 1730, not far from the towns of Riesa and Großenhain, between the villages of Zeithain, Glaubitz, Wülknitz and Streumen, Germany. This event was not only a demonstration of military strength with around 27,000 soldiers, but also one of the greatest baroque spectacles of the time, designed to impress the European powers. (including the King of Prussia, Frederick William I and 48 European princes). Widely considered the "military spectacle of the century," it featured grand feasts, massive fireworks, and the presentation of a legendary 23-foot-long Dresden Stollen cake.

The engraving comes from Homann Heirs atlas “Atlas Novus Terrarum Orbis Imperia Regna et Status Exactis Tabulis Geographice Demonstrans...”, published in Nuremberg, 1737.

Title: "Marckh Isen"

Description:
A rare and a detailed panoramic view of the market town of Isen in Bavaria, Germany, which was the site of the former Benedictine and later collegiate Isen Abbey. A heraldic shield topped with a mitre and crozier, signifying the town's ecclesiastical history.

The engraving comes from by Michael Wening atlas “Historico-topographica descriptio. Das ist: Beschreibung, dess Churfürsten- und Hertzogthumbs Ober- und Nidern Bayrn, welches in vier Theil oder Rennt-Aembter, als Oberlands München und Burgkhausen, Underlands aber in Landshuet unnd Straubing abgetheilt ist [...]. Thail 1. München: bey Johann Lucas Straub, gem: lobl. Landtschafft Buchtruckern, anno M.DCCI.”, published by Johann Lucas Straub in München 1701. The work contains a total of 846 illustrations across four volumes, documenting cities, monasteries, and castles throughout Bavaria. Michael Wening works are highly valued by historians because those he created in loco (on-site) feature a high degree of precision, documenting buildings before later Baroque renovations.
