Description:
Highly detailed Matthaus Merian’s copper engraved uncompleted panoramic view of Paris, France. Paris is shown from Parc des Buttes-Chaumont looking towards the south west. The foreground includes a back-view self-portrait of the artist seated on a boulder sketching. A numbered 1-49 key along the lower side identifying major buildings and important places within Paris.

Comes from rare edition Merian’s atlas “Neue Archontologia cosmica, das ist Beschreibung aller Kayserthumben, Königreichen & Republicken der gantzen Welt, die keinen Höhern erkennen … zusammen gelesen … durch Johann Ludwig Gottfried … verlegt von Matthæo Merian. Frankfurt am Main. Wolffgang Hoffmans. M. DC. XXXXVI. “ published in Frankfurt, 1646.

Condition:
Poor condition, about 9 cm missing of the right side of the view, margin added. Folding lines restored on verso. Few brownish areas present. Left margin extended. Pressed on two sheets, joined together.
