Title:                 “Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio per N. Visscher”​

Description:
Rare and highly decorative map of North and South America by Nicholas Visscher, second state (with the privilege at lower right side), derived from Blaeu’s world map. California is shown as an island, but northern coastline and the large open lake in the Great Lakes region present. The top cartouche contains the dedication to Cornelius Witsen, mayor of Amsterdam who financed many trips to the New World and depicts angels struggling with a devil for the soul of a Native American. The pictorial title cartouche showing the panning of gold or silver, hunting and a high ranking Indian standing under an umbrella.

The map comes from Nicolaes Visscher atlas “Atlas Contractus Orbis Terrarum Praecipuas ac Novissimas Complectens Tabulas…” published in Amsterdam 1677.
