1,200

Title:                      “Nouvelle Mappemonde dedièe au progrèes de nos connoissances”

Description:
Rare and very unusual world map designed that the earth can be divided into a water hemisphere and a land hemisphere with the Paris located at the center of the hemisphere. Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and most of South America appear together: the left sphere contains Patagonia, Australia and the East Indian Islands. The two halves are named Hemisphere Maritime and Hemisphere Terrestre. Australia and New Zealand are only shown partially. Jesso, north of Japan, is part of mainland Asia. The map is interesting for the name of the sea between Korea and Japan called Mer de Corée”. Above the hemispheres, a figure holds up outstretched hands to a beam of light inscribed with the words Fiat Lux (“Let there be light”). It also includes 350-word commentary on why the oblique south polar and north polar views were chosen.

The map comes from the atlas “Atlas Universel dresse sur des Meillieures Cartes Modernes …” published by Paolo Santini in Venice 1776.
