Title: "Nova Illustrissimi Principatus Pomeraniae Descriptio cum adjuncta Principum Genealogia et Principum veris et potiorum Urbium imaginibus et Nobilium Insignibus."

&

"Pomeraniae et rerum in ea memorabilium brevis descriptio E. Lubini" … "Nicolas Geilkerckius sculpsit"

Description:

Six original sheets from the "Große Lubinsche Karte", the great wall map of the Duchy of Pomerania and one of the most splendid regional maps of the 17th century. Duke Philipp II of Pomerania-Stettin commissioned it from Eilhard Lubinus (Lübben), professor at the University of Rostock, who surveyed the whole duchy himself. The map was engraved in Amsterdam by Nicolaes Geilkercken on twelve copper plates. Assembled, they form a map of about 221 x 125 cm, with the Griffin dynasty's family tree, 49 town views and the coats of arms of 353 noble families. Only a few proof copies were printed in 1618, and they are virtually unobtainable. The plates were rediscovered in 1756 and reprinted in 1758, the edition in which the map is usually found today.

This group contains six of the twelve sheets: the two central sheets of the top row, with the title and the genealogy (sheets 2 and 3), and the complete bottom row, with the description of Pomerania and its town views (sheets 9 to 12).

Sheets 2 and 3: the title and the Griffin dynasty.

The title: the great title runs across both sheets in a decorative frame.

The family tree: below it, the family tree of the House of Griffin, the dukes of Pomerania, grows across the Baltic like a vine. It carries dozens of medallion portraits, from the earliest princes to the ducal family of Lubinus's own day, with dates of birth, marriages and burials. Among them is Eric of Pomerania, King of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

The coast: sheet 2 shows the island of Rügen with Arkona, Jasmund and Mönchgut. Sheet 3 has a large compass rose and the coast of eastern Pomerania around Stolp, Rügenwalde and Schlawe.

Noble arms: along the top, a row of noble coats of arms "in alphabetical order, without prejudice to anyone".

Sheet 9: the description of Pomerania. Under the heading "Pomeraniae et rerum in ea memorabilium brevis descriptio E. Lubini", Lubinus's Latin account of the country begins. It is set in an architectural frame crowned by a river god and a sea nymph. Around it are views of Pasewalk, Ueckermünde, Greifenhagen (as a town plan), Damgarten, Richtenberg, Bahn (plan), Schlawe and a further town with a lettered key.

Sheet 10: the Oder. The map shows the Oder valley with Stettin, Damm, Gartz and Greifenhagen, the Dammscher See and Lake Madü, against the "Marchiae Pars" of Brandenburg. Beside the scale of miles, a surveyor works with compasses and instruments. The text describes Rügen, the bishopric of Cammin, the lordships of Lauenburg and Bütow, the climate, crops and the export of Pomeranian wool. Below are views of Zanow, Leba and Gartz.

Sheet 11: the engraver's signature. The map shows the country around Arnswalde and the Ihna river, with Geilkercken's signature "Nicolas Geilkerckius sculpsit" beside a putto, under a trophy of arms and musical instruments. The text describes the riches of Pomerania: fruit and wine, salt from Kolberg, amber from the coast, glassworks, bison, bears and wild horses, the falcons exported to France, England and Spain, and the famous fish of Lake Madü. Below are views of Damm (plan), Zachan and Jacobshagen.

Sheet 12: the lower right corner. A draped banner carries the arms of the Pomeranian lands above the history of Pomerania, from its conversion by St Otto of Bamberg to the Reformation and the founding of the University of Greifswald. It also gives a "Catalogus Urbium" listing the towns of the duchy and a "Catalogus Piscium" listing the fish of its waters. Around it are views of Cammin, Greifenberg, Rügenwalde, Saatzig, Bublitz, Körlin, Kolbatz and Friedrichswalde.

Every sheet is framed by bands of noble coats of arms with family names. A rare chance to own a substantial part of the most important early map of Pomerania, now divided between Germany and Poland.

Title: "De Sarmatia regione Europe"

Description:

An original leaf from the first, Latin edition of Hartmann Schedel's Liber Chronicarum, the famous Nuremberg Chronicle, printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger on 12 July 1493. It is an incunable, a book printed before 1501. The leaf belongs to the section on Sarmatia, Schedel's name for the Kingdom of Poland and the Jagiellonian lands, Lithuania among them. That section is printed on unnumbered leaves near the end of the book.

Woodcut side. Under the heading "De Sarmacia regione Europe" is a large woodcut from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. It shows an imaginary Sarmatian landscape from a bird's-eye view: castles on rocky heights, walled towns and church towers along a winding river, a long bridge, and a sea with sailing ships. At lower right are wooden buildings with a well-sweep and a trough, perhaps a reference to the salt production described in the text.

Below, under the heading "De regno Polonie et eius initio", a small woodcut of the royal insignia (orb, sceptre and crown) introduces the Latin text. It describes Sarmatia as a vast, thinly settled land under a harsh sky. Its borders are the Dnieper and the Don to the east, Hungary to the south, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and the Teutonic lands to the west, and the Baltic to the north. Kraków lies in Lesser Poland, Poznań and Gniezno in Greater Poland. From the legendary Duke Krak until Bolesław, only dukes ruled.

Text side. The text tells how Duke Bolesław received Emperor Otto in Poznań with great splendour. Silk cloth and robes decorated with gold and silver were spread along the road for three miles, and after every banquet the gold vessels were thrown into a well of unknown depth. Impressed, the emperor crowned Bolesław king, and Bolesław gave him the arm of St Adalbert, who had been killed by the Prussians. (Historically this was Otto III and Bolesław the Brave, at the Congress of Gniezno in the year 1000.)

Next comes the Lithuanian part of the story. The duke who ruled Lithuania and Ruthenia, Jogaila, was elected King of Poland. He accepted Christianity together with all his lands and joined Lithuania and Ruthenia to the Polish kingdom. He also defeated the Prussians, whose cities include Gdańsk and Toruń and the castle of Malbork, "the like of which no mortal is said to have seen".

The text then describes the country itself. Podolia has been laid waste by Tatars and Turks, yet it is so fertile that grass grows as tall as a man and honey is found everywhere. The Hercynian forest runs across Sarmatia from Kraków to Lithuania and Scythia, and bison ("bisontes") live in its northern part. There is no metal except lead, which the text blames on the cold planet Saturn. Salt, by contrast, is cut from the earth in huge blocks or boiled from brine, and it is the king's greatest treasure.

The page ends with a portrait of the Jagiellonian dynasty, written at the time:

Władysław III, King of Poland and Hungary, who fell fighting the Turks.

Casimir IV, Grand Duke of Lithuania and later King of Poland, and his marriage to Elisabeth of Austria, with whom he had six sons and five daughters.

Their sons: Vladislaus, King of Bohemia and Hungary; Casimir, "of great talent and prudence", who died of illness (St Casimir, later patron saint of Lithuania); John Albert, the reigning King of Poland; Alexander, whom "the Lithuanians took as their duke after their father's death" and who is called the greatest ornament of all Sarmatia; Sigismund; and Frederick, Bishop of Kraków and Archbishop of Gniezno.

The daughters married to the Duke of Bavaria, the Margrave of Brandenburg and the Duke of Pomerania.

Written while all five brothers were still alive, the text shows the Jagiellonian family at the moment Alexander had just become Grand Duke of Lithuania (1492).

This is an important early printed source on the Polish-Lithuanian state, with references to Jogaila, St Casimir and Grand Duke Alexander.

The Nuremberg Chronicles was the first printed history of the known world with about 2000 woodcuts the most picturesque work of the early time of printing. It became one of the most popular books of the 15th. century. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Albrecht Dürer and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger.

Title: "Beschreibung aller Länder / so etwan dem Königreich Polandt vnderworffen sind gewesen / oder sonst mit jhm zuschaffen gehabt. Cap. lvj."

Description:

Early woodcut map of Poland and Lithuania from the German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, published in Basel in 1598 by Sebastian Henricpetri. The map is printed on page 1236 (“Mccxxxvj”) of the Fourth Book, at the head of chapter 56. The chapter title translates as “Description of all the lands that were once subject to the Kingdom of Poland, or otherwise had dealings with it.”

The map covers the lands of the Polish–Lithuanian state, with north at the top. It runs from Danzig (“Dantzg”), Prussia (“Prüssen”), Thorn (“Thora”) and Silesia (“Schlesi”) in the west to Lithuania (“Litaw”), Vilnius (“Vilna”) and Kyiv (“Kyouia”) in the east, and south to Ruthenia (“Rüssen”) and Podolia. Other names include Kraków (“Cracow”), Lviv (“Lemburg”), Przemyśl (“Premisl”), Chełm, Płock (“Plotzko”), Grodno and Lutsk (“Lutzko”). The Vistula (“Wixel fl.”), Warta, Oder, Pilica, Narew, Neman and Bug rivers are marked. Forests are drawn as clusters of trees, mountains as small peaks and towns as little castle vignettes. The map also shows a “Sarmatie see” and the legendary “Amadoca see”, a lake taken from Ptolemy’s Geography.

Below the map, Münster begins his history of Poland’s rulers. He tells of Piast, a man of humble birth chosen as ruler at Kruszwica (“Crußnitz”), who moved the royal seat to Gniezno (“Gnesnam oder Gnisen”). He continues with Piast’s successors and with Mieszko I, the first Christian prince, baptized in 965 after marrying a daughter of Boleslaus of Bohemia. The text lists the nine bishoprics Mieszko founded, among them Gniezno, Kraków, Poznań and Płock, and ends with the marriage of his son Bolesław to a daughter of the King of Hungary in 984.

On the reverse (page 1235, “Mccxxxv”) is a typeset family tree of Poland’s rulers, titled “Von dem Hertzoge oder König Pyast vnd seinen nachkommenden Königen vnnd Fürsten” (Of Duke or King Piast and the kings and princes descended from him). Münster introduces it:

“So that you may see in brief how the kings and dukes of the land of Poland sprang from the first stem, Piast, I have drawn almost all of them into one figure. I will then take them one after another and tell briefly of their deeds and what happened in their time.”

Twenty-six numbered rulers run from Piast through the Piast dukes and kings. A line across the tree reads “Bey dieser Linien ist das Königlich Regiment blieben” (The royal rule remained with this line). The tree ends with the rulers connected to Lithuania: Queen Jadwiga (“Hedwig”) and her husband Jogaila (“Jagello, dessen Tauffnamme Vladislaus”, whose baptismal name was Władysław), then Władysław, King of Hungary and Poland, and Casimir, “Herr in Littaw vnd König zu Polandt” (Lord of Lithuania and King of Poland). Casimir’s sons follow: Władysław, Casimir (St. Casimir, patron saint of Lithuania), John Albert, Alexander, Frederick and Sigismund. The last name in the tree is Sigismund Augustus, the last Jagiellonian king of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

Map comes from the rare German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled “Cosmographey, das ist Beschreibung aller Länder, herzschaften und für nemesten Stetten des gantzen Erdbodens sampt ihren Gelegenheiten, Eygenschaften, Religion, Gebräuchen, Geschichten und Handtierungen... / durch hern Sebastianum Munster...”, published in 1598 by Sebastianum Henricpetri in Basel. It was one of the most influential geographical works of the 16th Century.

Title: "Nouvelle et Exacte Description du Royaume de Pologne & des Estats qui en dependent. Par P. Duval Geographe ord.re du Roy. 1686”

Description:

Extremely rare and decorative antique map of Poland, Lithuania, Livonia, Belarus and Ukraine, published in Paris under the name of Pierre Duval, Geographer to the King and nephew of Nicolas Sanson. Duval died in 1683, and his wife and daughters took over his business, so the date 1686 marks a posthumous issue.
The map covers the whole Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, from Pomerania and Silesia in the west to Smolensk and Muscovy in the east. It runs from Livonia and Courland in the north to Moldavia, Transylvania and the Black Sea coast in the south. Names appear in 17th-century French spellings, including Samogitie, Vilne (Vilnius), Troki (Trakai), Kouno (Kaunas), Grodno, Novogrodeck and Minsk. Forests, the Pripet marshes of Polesie, rivers and province lettering are drawn throughout.

A legend ("Explication des Marques") identifies archbishoprics, Catholic and "schismatic" (Orthodox) bishoprics, palatinates, castellanies, imperial and Hanseatic towns and battlefields. A scroll at upper left carries a French description of the kingdom. It covers the kingdom's size and produce, its elective monarchy (the king elected at Warsaw and crowned at Kraków by the Archbishop of Gniezno), the Polish nobility and cavalry, and the lands of the Cossacks ("Cosaques") Ukraine, Little Tartary ("Petite Tartarie"), the fortress of Kudack and Ochakiv ("Oczackou"), and the gulf labeled "Golfe de Nigropoli". Small pictorial views of Vienna and Pressburg sit at lower left, and the sheet carries the Paris imprint of Jollain ("Se vendent a Paris chez Iollain rue S. Iaque a l'Enfant Jesus, privilege du Roy.").

On top left corner description's translation:

"The scroll at upper left reads, in translation: Poland is the largest kingdom of Europe, more than 300 of our leagues long and a little less wide. It is fertile in grain, wax and honey; its finest furs come from Muscovy; and it enjoys both the Baltic and the Black Sea, the Vistula, Niemen and Dvina flowing to the Baltic and the Dnieper, Bug and Dniester to the Black Sea. The kingdom is elective: the King is elected by the Senate at Warsaw and crowned at Kraków by the Archbishop of Gniezno. The Church and the Senate make up the estates; the bishops rank first after the King, then the palatines and castellans. The nobles are equal, and only offices decide precedence. The Poles wear long garments, shave their beards and keep a single tuft of hair. Their cavalry has reached 100,000 horse, but confidence, and fear of making a king or the townsmen too powerful, has led them to neglect fortresses. Most towns are built of wood. The Cossacks form a militia against the Lesser Tatars and the Turks, living in the lower parts of Volhynia and Podolia called "Ukraine," that is, "Desert." Having rebelled in recent years, these people began the misfortunes of the State. The principal cities are Kraków, Poznań, Warsaw, Vladislau, Marienburg, Königsberg, Vilnius, Kyiv, Kamieniec and Lwów. Danzig, Elbing, Thorn and Culm, in Royal Prussia, are free cities under Poland's protection."

Separately issued sheet map, published in Paris by Gérard Jollain the younger (rue Saint-Jacques, à l'Enfant Jésus) under Pierre Duval's name, three years after Duval's death.

Title: "CRACOVIA Sedes Regia obsessa et à Serenissimo Sveo: Gothorum Rege CAROLO GVSTAVO diditione [sic] capta d: 8 Octob: Anno 1655”

Description:

Very large, detailed panoramic engraving of the Swedish siege of Kraków in 1655, during the Second Northern War ("the Deluge" in Polish history). The old royal capital stretches across the middle distance below the Royal Castle on Wawel ("Arx Regia"), with the Vistula and the suburbs of Kazimierz, Stradom and Kleparz labeled. Mortar bombs arc over the walls and gunsmoke rises along the front. The Swedish army of King Charles X Gustav fills the foreground in ordered rows of tents, with the royal tent enclosure at the center. Gunners, cavalry, foragers and supply wagons crowd the lower edge. Two draped banners at the top list the Swedish cavalry ("Equitatus") and infantry ("Peditatus") regiments by letter. A 28-part key at the foot identifies the city's churches, monasteries, the Jesuit college and St. Florian's Gate. The title cartouche is crowned with the Swedish arms among flags, weapons and armor.

Despite the "ad viv." (from life) signature, Dahlbergh did not join the army until 1656. Polish researchers have noted that the skyline of Kraków is a mirror image, probably copied from Braun & Hogenberg's earlier view, while the encampment draws on Dahlbergh's own troop dispositions.

The drawing was made by Erik J. Dahlbergh, painter and architect in the service of Charles X Gustav, and engraved by Willem Swidde (signed "W. Swidde Sculp."). The plate is numbered N 16. It comes from Samuel von Pufendorf's history of the reign of Charles X Gustav, published by Christoph Riegel in Nuremberg in 1697.

Title: "Carte de la Russie Européenne en LXXVII feuilles exécutée au Dépôt général de la Guerre”

Description:
Very rare, large size and extremely detailed antique map from one of the more unusual cartographic projects of the Napoleonic era: a complete map of European Russia, translated and re-engraved in France from a Russian survey in 104 sheets. The French army's own mapping office, the Dépôt général de la Guerre in Paris, issued the result as Carte de la Russie Européenne en LXXVII feuilles between 1812 and 1814 — 77 sheets at a scale of 1:500,000, assembling into a composite map roughly 2.7 by 2.7 meters when laid out in full. This sheet, numbered A.6, covers the western borderlands around Memel, Tilsit, Kaunas and Vilnius, now Lithuania teritory.

The project's timing is part of what makes it compelling: work on the 77-sheet edition began during the 1812 campaign itself, while Napoleon's army was still in Russia. The earliest sheets reportedly sold well enough in Paris that Napoleon personally ordered, on 30 July 1812, that nothing further be released from the war depots — an order that reads, in hindsight, like an acknowledgment that the map amounted to detailed Russian military intelligence now in French hands.

Sheet A.6 itself carries both a Russian and a French scale — "Echelle en Verstes de 104½ au Degré" and "Echelle en Lieues de 25 au Degré (500000)" — reflecting its origin as a translated Russian survey adapted for French staff officers. Towns appear in French transliteration of their Russian-administered names (Kovno, Vilna, Rossiena), while the Curonian Spit and Lagoon keep their German forms (Curische Nehrung, Curisches Haff) right at the Prussian frontier. The spaced lettering "GOUV." running across the sheet continues onto neighboring sheets as "Gouvernement de Wilna" — correct for 1812, since Kaunas and Samogitia were not split off into a separate Kovno Governorate until 1842–43.

Sheets from this series are occasionally catalogued under the geographer Edme Mentelle, but that attribution doesn't hold up well: Mentelle's own major cartographic project of the period, the Atlas national de la France produced with Pierre-Grégoire Chanlaire, covered the French departments, not Russia. The Bibliothèque nationale de France and the University of Bern both catalogue this series under the Dépôt général de la Guerre alone, with no individual geographer credited.

Complete 77-sheet sets survive mainly in institutional collections such as the BnF and Bern; individual sheets reach the market far more often, and one centered on the Lithuanian heartland — Kaunas, Vilnius, Trakai — has obvious appeal for collectors of Napoleonic history or Baltic regional cartography alike.

Description:
This is the famous Radvila's (Radziwill) map of Lithuania which occupies a very prominent position among works of European cartography from the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century and is an important contribution to the progress in the mapping of the whole continent. The map had its beginning in 1586 when Prince Michael Radziwill commissioned M. Strubicz to survey the entire Lithuanian state which then included Poland. The resulting map was so accurate and detailed that it provided the basis for all subsequent maps of the area during the 17th and 18th centuries: rivers and small communities are not only indicated but considerable historical information is also provided. It also includes a number of historical notations and two vignettes illustrating important battles west of Smolensk and between Braclaw and Cherkasy. It is the first published map to include the name “Ukraina.” The region west of Kiova (Kyiv) is called Volynia Ulterior, quae tum Ukraina tum nis ab aliis volcitatur. The map shows 1020 towns and villages and within the boundaries of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania alone there are 511 towns, 31 villages, and 1 monastery.

The second map showing the course of the Dnieper River from Cherkasy to the estuary on the Black Sea. The map is in strip style with two vertical maps following the course of the river, each decorated with cartouches and compass roses and including numerous lengthy notations describing the cataracts, cities, salt mines, fortresses, and the historical traditions of the Kozaks. Putti flank a large cartouche at bottom. French text on verso.

Two separate maps, can be joined together.

Comes from Willem Janszoon Blaeu French atlas ” Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive atlas novus in quo tabulae et descriptiones omnium regionum ” engraved by Graveris Hessel Gerritsz, published in Amsterdam, 1643.

Description:

Rare and very detailed antique map of the Neumark (New March), the historical eastern territory of Brandenburg, newly drafted and divided according to its administrative districts (Kreise) by German cartographer Franz Ludwig Güssefeld. The map covers the region bordered by Hinterpommern (Farther Pomerania) to the north, Polen (Poland) to the east, Schlesien (Silesia) to the south, and the Uckermark/Mittelmark to the west, with the Oder and Warthe (Warthe Fl.) rivers clearly traced through the territory.

The nine constituent Kreise are individually hand-colored and identified by two-letter abbreviations (KK – Königsberg, SoK – Soldin, LK – Landsberg, FK – Friedeberg, AK – Arensvalde, DK – Dramburg, SK – Schiefelbein, StK – Sternberg, CrK – Crossen, ZK – Züllichau, SchK – Schwiebus), fully explained in an extensive legend ("Erläuterung der Zeichen und Buchstaben") in the upper left corner detailing town ranks, church types, mills, noble estates, and administrative seats.

The lower right features an elegant neoclassical title cartouche in the form of a stone altar/pedestal set beneath trees, bearing the imprint: published in Nuremberg by Weigel und Schneider, 1789, under Imperial privilege ("Mit Kayserl. allergnst. Privil."). A pair of scale bars (German/geographic miles and large miles) appears below the cartouche too.

Franz Ludwig Güssefeld was a highly influential Prussian cartographer, engineer, and surveyor renowned for creating exceptionally accurate regional and international maps.

Description:
Very detailed and decorative panoramic engraving of Warsaw, Poland, depicting the city as it appeared during the Swedish occupation in 1656. The panorama captures Warsaw looking westward across the Vistula River from the right-bank suburb of Praga. The Foreground features figures of Swedish soldiers, cavalrymen, and horses traveling along the riverbank. The Skyline shows Warsaw's mid-17th-century landmarks before they were severely damaged during the Second Northern War ("The Deluge"). Key visible structures include the Royal Castle, Sigismund's Column, and various aristocratic palaces and church spires. A large, draped banner at the top center frames the Latin inscription detailing the city's capitulation to the forces of King Charles X Gustav on July 22, 1656. The cartouche is lavishly decorated in the Baroque style with military trophies, standards, armor, and heraldic elements framing.

The drawing was made by Erik J. Dahlberg, painter and architect in the service of Charles X Gustav during the Polish-Swedish War.

Comes from the Samuel Pufendorf book “De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciæ Rege Gestis commentariorum libri septem. Elegantissimis Tabulis æneis exornati cum triplici Indice”, engraved by Nicolas Pérelle, published by Christophorus Riegel Literis Knorzianis in Nürnberg, 1696.

During this brief transitional period, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth still existed as a heavily reduced rump state. The remaining central territory shown on your map would only last for two more years before the final Third Partition completely dissolved the nation in 1795.

Description:

Antique map of the surroundings of Gdańsk (Danzig), Poland. The map is uniquely oriented to the East/Southeast (rather than North), which allows for a dramatic layout of the Vistula River delta flowing toward the Baltic Sea coast on the left. The large pink and white geometric sectors illustrate the Danziger Werder and Marienburger Werder. These areas show the intricate drainage channels, dikes, and agricultural plots developed heavily by Dutch Mennonite settlers to manage the low-lying delta lands.

A detailed architectural cityscape panorama titled "Prospect der Stadt Danzig" sits inside a decorative pedestal frame. It captures the famous skyline of the city from a distance, crowned at the top by the city's official coat of arms. Left vignette features classical allegorical figures, including a personification of Fame or Geography holding navigational tools alongside a globe. Right vignette depicts bustling harbor merchants, figures in traditional clothing, and shipping crates, celebrating the city's historic prominence as a major Polish Baltic trading port.

The map comes from the Johann Baptist Homann atlas “Atlas Novus…“, published in Nuremberg, c. 1730.

Description:

Extremely rare antique map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania divided into its administrative palatinates (voivodeships) and castellanies. It depicts parts of modern-day Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Latvia, and Ukraine. The Cartouche: The decorative title cartouche features the traditional Lithuanian coat of arms — Vytis — depicting a charging knight on horseback. The regions are color-coded to emphasize administrative borders, complete with meticulous hand-drawn symbols for forests, mountain ranges, and major river systems.

The geographical layout was originally created and engraved by the Dutch cartographer Justus Danckerts in Amsterdam. Following the decline of the Danckerts firm, the Ottens brothers acquired their inventory of printing plates in 1726. They modified the cartouche at the top to display their own imprint—"Authore per R. & J. Ottens"—and sold it inside their own commercial atlase "Atlas Maior" published in Amsterdam.

Title: "Poloniӕ Amplissimi Regni .. Typvs Geographicvs”

Description:
Extremely rare map of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Second edition with portrait of King Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632), ruler from 1587 to the year of his death. Visible traces of a blurred portrait of King Stefan Batory from a plate executed in 1576.

Comes from the Cornelis de Jode's atlas "Speculum Orbis Terrae..." published by Vidua et Heredus Gerardi de Iudaeis in Antwerp, 1593.

De Jode maps are extremely rare because the publication of his atlas was deliberately hampered by his cartographic rival Abraham Ortelius who quite rightly perceived De Jode as a serious threat to his dominance of 16th century atlas and map publishing. Ortelius was very well connected and used his influence to block the publication of De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae' for over five years. De Jode's maps are visually stunning but continued interference by Ortelius resulted in commercial failure and they are rarely available today because so few copies of the atlas were ever sold.
