Description:
The exceptional antique map of Northeast of United States, with one of the earliest birds-eye view of New York (New Amsterdam), it shows celebrating of Dutch re-occupation in 1672-74. Instead of Dutch allegory the cartouche presents a long procession of natives carry American goods to the English monarch, presumably George II, who is being attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of coins. Within the map are engraved many birds and animals including turkeys, herons, bears, moose, foxes, rabbits, and beavers. There are also images of Indian villages. Seutter has engraved the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This is the fourth state of the map.
The map comes from T. C. Lotter atlas “Grosser Atlas…” in Augsburg 1757.
